Declutter

I know, the dreaded “d” word. But it really is the most important thing you can do to make your small spaces feel bigger. As you may know, clutter in your home makes your space feel cramped and smaller than it really is. The less you have, the less you have to find a place for. If you do nothing else, declutter and you will be amazed by how big your home will feel. Next time you are considering buying something new, ask yourself “Do I really need this?” (Learn about decluttering tips here).

Look up for storage

It’s time to get creative when it comes to finding extra storage in your space. Your room and home is more than just the “floorplan.” You can find some great storage solutions if you think about going up. What about the area above your cabinets? Is there space above any doors for a shelf or two or three? Take a look in your closet. Is there wasted space above your clothes rack? There’s almost always some high spot you can take advantage of when you really take a look at your small space. Try some wall hung shelves above a sofa or a wall-mounted bedside table. Ikea and The Container Store are my favorites for storage options. (We love our wall mounted spice rack in the kitchen).

Larger objects, but less of them

Lots of small objects makes a room feel small and cluttered (there’s that word again). Instead, utilize some larger decorations and furniture. For example, a large area rug makes a room look larger than a small floating rug in the middle of the room. Another option would be one L-shaped sectional instead of a sofa and two chairs. Don’t overfill your home with lots of furniture, but be selective with your large pieces, and you will have great results!

Color and lighting

You probably guessed it and you are right! Light and bright is the way to go when making your small space appear larger. Painting your walls in lighter colors help reflect light. This will make your space feel brighter, bigger and more generous. Painting the walls and ceiling the same color makes a room look taller. Similarly, painting the base boards the same color, also gives some added height to a room. Don’t cover your windows with heavy curtains – you want to let all of that natural light in! In a bedroom, try some black-out blinds. For a living room, some sheer curtains allow light to pour in! But don’t be afraid to use some accent colors — throw pillows are great here! We don’t our home to feel like a home, not a sterile room.
