Do you find yourself complaining a lot or just dealing with overall negativity? I know some days the struggle is real! But I’ve been trying different ways to stay positive. Below are a few of my favorite ways for staying positive. When I do these things, I feel better and accomplish more. (And I’m just generally nicer to be around)!
1. Start your day with something positive
Try to listen to something uplifting or motivational first thing in the morning. Don’t immediately reach for your phone and look at emails and social media. (I am huge violator of this rule, but I try every day to be just a little better – progress over perfection). You can watch a YouTube video, read some motivational quotes, or listen to a podcast. Some days, I just listen to a few songs that make me feel empowered and happy – it really is that simple to stay positive! You will be amazed by how choosing what you fill your mind with first thing in the morning, will set you up for a happy and successful day.
2. Practice gratitude
Sometimes we forget that there are good things going on in our lives. By taking the time every morning to think about a few things that you are grateful for, you can really make those tough days, more bearable. I like to take some time to write these down – either in a notebook or planner. Then at the end of the year, I read it and see all the things I was grateful for that year! (Perhaps some good things did in fact occur in 2020?!)
3. Practice self-care
Don’t forget the importance of self-care. Sometimes we spend so much time worrying and taking care of others, we forget to dedicate the time to take care of ourselves. This can really make a difference in your overall positivity level. I personally like an at home spa day to recharge. (I just did this yesterday). Working out can also help you clear your head — those endorphins really do work! I do some of my best thinking when out taking a walk. (I swear I’m brilliant when I walk — similar to my ability to sing like a professional in the shower).
4. Spend time with some furry friends
Take the time to be with your four-legged family members. This seems silly, but I love those Saturday mornings when my big German Shepherd climbs up on the bed and snuggles next to me! Talk about a happy start to the day! Sometimes he is literally laying on top of me and I can’t breathe, but it is all worth it! If you don’t have a four-legged friend at home, go somewhere to see some. I will go to a local pet store or rescue or dog park and spend some time with the puppies (all puppies need some love and attention). After I leave, I can’t stop smiling!
5. Do something nice for others
Doing a good deed for someone else (without expecting or wanting anything in return) is a great way to make sure you keep a positive attitude throughout the day. It can be something really simple, like taking the time to say hello to a neighbor. Or holding the door at the store. Even saying thank you to someone who helps you and really meaning it, can make a huge impact on your day and their positivity for the day.
I hope some of these tips will help you stay positive even during those times when we think all is lost. Even practicing one of these will make a huge impact on your life and those around you!
